Gary Countryman is chairman Emeritus of Liberty Mutual Group, a diversified, international group of insurance companies and the eighth largest property and casualty insurer in the United States.

Gary received a bachelor's degree in 1961 and a master's degree in business and economics in 1963, both from the University of Oregon. After completing his education, he began a career at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company that would span nearly forty years.

In 1986 Gary was named Liberty Mutual's chief executive officer. He became chairman and CEO in 1992 and continued in his role as chairman until 2000. Now retired, Gary has taken on the role of chairman emeritus.

In his years at Liberty Mutual, Gary transformed the company from a U.S. domestic property and casualty insurer into a leading international financial services group of companies. His leadership and vision created an enduring legacy. During his tenure as chairman at Liberty Mutual, revenues grew from $4.9 billion to $13.6 billion, assets increased from $10 billion to more than $54 billion.

Today, Boston-based Liberty Mutual Group ranks among the Fortune 500 largest corporations in the United States. The one of the largest multiline insurers in the property and casualty industry worldwide, Liberty Mutual employs 37,000 people in more than 900 offices throughout the world.

A flyer, sailor, and sometime golfer, Gary has also been actively involved in additional endeavors. He is a trustee at Northeastern University and on the boards of directors of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (chairman), FleetBoston Financial Corp., Neiman Marcus, NSTAR, Liberty Mutual, and United Ways of Eastern New England (president), Junior Achievement of New England (chairman), and Boston History Collaborative (chairman).
